Medicare Inpatient vs. Outpatient Status
Short answer
A formal inpatient admission is generally a Part A hospital stay; outpatient and observation services are generally Part B even when a beneficiary remains in the hospital overnight.
Conditions
Status depends on the hospital’s admission order and Medicare rules, not simply the number of hours spent in a bed.
Not Automatic
An overnight stay does not make someone an inpatient. Observation time generally does not count toward the ordinary 3-day inpatient requirement for later SNF coverage.
Costs And Ma
Part A and Part B have different cost structures. Private Medicare plans can have different cost sharing while still applying Medicare status rules.
Practical Example
A patient may spend two nights under observation and still be an outpatient for Medicare billing and SNF-qualifying-stay purposes.
