What Is a Medicare Summary Notice?
Short answer
A Medicare Summary Notice, or MSN, is the statement Original Medicare sends showing Part A and Part B claims, what Medicare approved and paid, what you may owe and how to appeal. It is not a bill.
Coverage
The MSN can be used to verify providers, dates, services, Medicare-approved amounts and denial remarks. It also provides first-level appeal instructions for Original Medicare decisions.
Not Automatic
The amount shown as ‘you may be billed’ is not always the same as a valid final provider bill. Assignment, supplemental insurance and corrections can affect what is actually owed.
Practical Example
If an MSN lists a service you never received, contact Medicare and the provider rather than paying a bill without investigating the claim.
