Medicare in Florida
Direct answer: Medicare is a federal program, so the basic rules for Original Medicare are national. What changes locally in Florida is the private-plan market: Medicare Advantage and Part D options are offered by service area, Medigap availability is governed by federal rules plus state protections, and cost-assistance programs are administered by the state.
Start with the four decisions
Most people comparing Medicare in Florida are deciding among four related questions:
- Whether to use Original Medicare or a Medicare Advantage plan.
- If using Original Medicare, whether to add a Medicare Supplement (Medigap) policy.
- How to obtain prescription drug coverage through Part D.
- Whether they may qualify for a Medicare Savings Program or Extra Help.
Those choices should be made from the beneficiary’s actual ZIP code, doctors, hospitals, prescriptions, pharmacy preferences, travel needs and other coverage—not from a statewide list of plans.
Medicare Advantage in Florida
Medicare Advantage plans are private Medicare plans. Availability and benefits can vary by county and ZIP code. HMO and PPO rules can also affect whether a doctor or hospital is in network, what happens when care is received outside the network, and whether referrals or prior authorization apply.
See the Medicare Advantage guide and use Medicare Plan Compare for the beneficiary’s current ZIP code.
Medicare Supplement in Florida
Medigap works with Original Medicare and helps pay certain cost-sharing amounts. The strongest federal enrollment protection is the one-time Medigap Open Enrollment Period that begins when a person is enrolled in Part B and is at least 65. Other guaranteed-issue situations may apply. Florida has state-specific Medigap rules, including under-65 access and issue-age rating. Your ability to buy a policy without medical underwriting depends on the enrollment protections that apply to you. Confirm your rights before cancelling or replacing coverage.
See the Medicare Supplement guide.
Part D prescription coverage
Part D plan value depends on the exact medications, dosage, formulary tier, preferred pharmacies and plan rules. For 2026, no Medicare drug plan may have a deductible above $615, and the annual out-of-pocket threshold for covered Part D drugs is $2,100 before catastrophic coverage.

Help with Medicare costs
Florida Department of Children and Families (DCF) administers state-level assistance relevant to Medicare Savings Programs. QMB, SLMB and QI-1 may help eligible Medicare beneficiaries with premiums and, depending on the program, other Medicare cost sharing.
The Florida Department of Children and Families determines eligibility for Medicare Savings Programs. Check the current DCF guidance for the application period that applies to you; income, resources and program rules can affect eligibility.

Local considerations
Florida’s Medicare market is highly local. County/ZIP availability, provider systems, seasonal residence, travel and pharmacy access can materially change which plan structure works well for a beneficiary.
